Greg Howe, Tourism Queensland’s Regional Director for both Tourism Tropical North Queensland and Townsville Enterprise has offered to do a presentation on Tourism Queensland and the latest Destination Management Plans (DMPs) for both regions.

These plans incorporate key strategies for the marketing and promotion of both regions to the domestic and international visitor markets. Greg is happy to present aspects of the plans which will assist in developing a definition of the destination between Cairns and Townsville, which can complement and take advantage of existing marketing efforts.

Parker Travel Collection will also be presenting and hosting group discussions on facilitating the distribution of your product to domestic and international trade partners. These discussions will be key components to assisting your business growth, expansion and presence in the market place.

Please send your acceptance to attend the workshop to: secretary@tropicalcoasttourism.com.au, or call Michelle Lloyd on 0428 264 494.

Tropical Coast Tourism has been funded by The Department of State Development to review the way the area between Cairns and Townsville is perceived by locals and visitors.

The current name for the area is Great Green Way, which was developed over ten years ago. There have been many changes in that time which need to be considered, including new commercial and tourism developments, promotional campaigns such as the Great Tropical Drive and new visitor profiles coming to the area for recreation and ‘sea change’ lifestyles.

Developing a clear definition for a destination is very important for a number of reasons:

• When a destination is perceived to be an attractive place to visit or live, everybody in the community benefits.

• It highlights the real character and personality of the destination and creates a unifying focus to aid all public, private, and non-profit sector organizations that rely on the image of the place and its attractiveness.

• It fosters a unified and cooperative approach to destination marketing.

• It corrects out of date, inaccurate or unbalanced perceptions.

• It increases the ability to attract, recruit, and retain talented people.

• It enhances civic pride and advocacy.

The workshop will go through a systematic process aimed at helping participants come up with the key factors to be incorporated into an accurate and attractive description of the destination from Cairns to Townsville, capturing the region’s strengths and diversity. Outcomes from the workshop will be

• Collective positioning and differentiation of the whole destination between Cairns and Townsville through the development of a high quality destination definition

• Industry and Community understanding and support of the Branding process which promotes the destination definition

• Genuine commitment by industry and the community to a sustained Destination Definition/Brand Management Strategy over a ten year time period

It is very important that we attract a good cross section of people from the whole destination in order to develop an accurate picture of the diversity and strengths of the region. We would like to encourage you to allocate time for this important workshop in your busy schedule.
