Martin Sharp sculpts expressions. Since his early childhood he has felt compelled to capture emotion in clay.
In pursuit of this passion, Martin’s life experience has been extensive and is populated with many tales of adventures
in unusual and remote locations and in specialist technical fields. During these adventures he studied closely the nature
of people and their varied expressions of their inner lives.
In 2002, giving up his work as a submarine pilot to fully commit to his sculpture, he let his then New Zealand base
for the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria where he had a working studio and sculpted full time. Students from local
art faculties and other local artists often frequented the studio to watch him at work and study his use of materials.
Considered to b a “pioneer” in the sculptural use of M1, and acrylic gypsum product, his sculptures are
born in clay, reproduced from a mould of M1 and then cast in different mediums including M1 and bronze.
Featured in the book “Selected Contemporary Artists of Australia” in 2003, his works are becoming well
known in both regional and city galleries and other cultural venues.
Martin’s figurative works include full size figures, figurines, busts and torsos. His works possess a simplicity
of presence that is easy and appealing yet strangely disturbing. They are “expressions of interest” that
all people can identify with each in their own unique way and all elicit varied and interesting responses.
Arousing, challenging, alluring and tactile, his sculptures are imbued with a feeling and movement rarely produced
by contemporary sculptors.
Martin Sharp sculptures are limited editions and may be cast in bronze upon request. His sculptures are represented
in both Australian and overseas private and corporate collections. He is, of course, available for commissioned works
upon request and lives locally.
